Abstract

While visiting USP and ICMSC-USP, Dr. J. Scott Carter proposes to study the geometric topology of codimension 1 immersions and knotted surfaces in dimension 4. Below, the relationships between these topics will be discussed. Throughout this proposal all manifolds and maps are assumed to be smooth and all immersions and projections are assumed to be in general position. Problem 1: Codimension 1 immersions and the Kervaire invariant. Problem 2: Braided surfaces and surfaces in 4 dimensions. Problem 3: Topological Quantum Field Theories in Dimension 4. (AU)
