Abstract

This project, to be elaborated over a two-year period, consists of organizing an anthology of Brazilian poetry from Independence to the appearance of the avant-garde in the nineteen-fifties.The ultimate result of the project will be the production of a four volume series of books for use at the secondary or college level. Similar to the _ Presença da litertura brasileira _ collection, each volume will contain a significant number of poems for each author, as well as a summary of the author's place in the body of criticism on Brazilian poetry. The distinctive feature of this project is its concern with the exposition and discussion of the principal narrative models that not only oversee the historiography of Brazilian literature, but also preside over the construction and defense of specific canons.
