Abstract

The nucleus/melt interfacial energy is one of the most important thermodynamic parameters determining the crystal nucleation kinetics in liquids and glasses. This proposal aims at the determination of the surface energy by two distinct approaches. Additionally, a possible correlation between glass transition temperature, the nucleation mechanism and the magnitude of the volume nucleation rate in inorganic glasses previously suggested by us will be critically analysed using new kinetic data and also literature values for the crystallization rates of several glasses.
