John E. Bauer | Collage of Veterinary Medicine - Texas A&M University - Estados Unidos

Dr. John Bauer is an international leader on fatty acid and lipid metabolism and requirements to dogs and cats. With dozens of papers on this area, Dr. Bauer coordinated the section on Fatty Acid Requirements and Metabolism of the last review of The Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats, National Research Council (2006). Our proposal to his visit to Brazil includes the discussion of the results obtained on the research project FAPESP (2006/05015-2) "Evaluation of Fatty Acid Sources and lecithin use on extruded diets to cats". Interesting and new data was obtained by the project, especially on essential fatty acid absorption (arachidonic, eicosaphentahenoic, and docosahexaenoic). These data do not have been previously described. Coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility and metabolizable energy content also differed between evaluated fatty sources. For a better interpretation of these data, a deep evaluation of intestinal physiology and metabolism may be important. During his time in Brazil, Dr. Bauer also will lecture a graduation course to the graduation students of the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Medicina Veterinária, área Clínica Veterinária, da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias da Unesp, Campus de Jaboticabal. The discipline will include metabolism and requirements of fatty acids, metabolic particularities of fatty metabolism in cats, dyslipdemias in dogs, obesity, etc. Finally, Dr. Bauer will have two presentations on the I Congresso Internacional sobre Nutrição de Animais de Estimação and VIII Simpósio sobre Nutrição de Animais de Estimação, promoted between May 7 and 8 of 2009 by the Colégio Brasileiro de Nutrição Animal in Campinas, SP. With this schedule we will better use the time of Dr. Bauer in Brazil, which will collaborate for the consolidation of this research line and institutional exchange of our Programa de Pós-Graduação.
