This proposal seeks to obtain financial assistance for a 12 months visit of the researcher Catherine Dixon, from Central Saint Martins/University of the Arts London, to the Architecture and Urbanism College/University of São Paulo (FAUUSP). Catherine Dixon is a great specialist in typography and editorial design. The results of her Ph.D. on typeface classification and letterform description, completed in 2003, were widely published and soon became a reference for the international community. Her job as curator of the Central Lettering Record, and her research on lettering in the urban space are also widely recognized. More recently, Dixon has been interested in the preservation of the practice of printing with movable type and in the relevance of this practice for the teaching of graphic design. Her visit to Brazil is being awaited with enthusiasm by a significant portion of the Brazilian community of graphic design research. Once Dixon expects to spend one year in Brazil, it has being planned a schedule that will allow for contacts with research teams based not only in São Paulo State (USP, UNICAMP, UNESP, SENAC-SP), but also with other poles of a research network that includes teams from Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio, ESDI-UERJ), Paraná (UFPR), Espírito Santo (UFES) and Pernambuco (UFPE).
