New organic-inorganic hybrids based on vegetable oils and derivatives

Abstract

Part of the research developed at the Laboratory of Photonics Materialsof the Instute of Chemistry - São Paulo State University- UNESP is being devoted to organic-inorganic hybrid materials, with properties resulting from the synergy between components.The organic counterpart is being characterized by different polymers as polyoxiethylene, polyurethanes, cellulose, polymethylmetacrylate, among others. In particular, in the master thesys of Kiria Serranegra (2009) the organic part considered was the fat acid obtained from castor oil, the ricinoleic acid. At that opportunity it was clear that it is possible to obtain new interesting materials with new properties with vegetable oils as the base precursors. In fact obtaining new materials enviromentally friedly, from natural precursors, and presenting recycling properties and biodegradability is on the top of the demand for new materialsIn parallel at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul the Prof. Martinelli´s group is being involved with very interesting research with vegetable oils derivatives by the addition of functionalities like epoxi or hydroxil groups. These new molecules are potentially interesting precursors in the preparation of organic-inorganic hybridsThis solicitation has the main objective of bringing Prof. Martinelli to Araraquara for a 8 months period. Research activities and a course based on oil-chemistry are suggested.We hope to catalyse common research and cooperation beween the two universities (AU)
