Abstract

Activities description Graduate Program in History: Area "Politics, Memory and the city" Seminar line of research "Politics, culture and memory". August 7 Research Project to stay for one month (Visiting Researcher - FAPESP/Unicamp) - August 2012 This stay will be an opportunity to continue a research project started in August last year, when my project was selected for one of the French Chairs of the universities of the state of São Paulo (UNICAMP). The research integrates in the same time in my reflections on the Nipo-Brazilian presence in Sao Paulo, and on ethnic neighborhoods - particularly the Liberdade August 14Conference in Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro off the book Justa. Aracy de Carvalho e o resgate de judeus: trocando a Alemanha nazista pelo Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, Civilização Brasileira, 2011, 526p. August 15 Conference in Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. August 22PAGU/IFCH/UNICAMP 9h as 12h e 14h as 17h - Workshop "Gênero, memória e curso da vida adulta". August 23 2. "The Micro-history between archives, research objects and the writing of history." I will discuss some selected texts, dealing with the micro-history as a strand of historiography, and present how I used these readings to some previous studies in which I emphasized a smaller scale of the object I studied to get closer to the experiences and daily lives of the actors. August 28 1. "Ethnic persecution. The expulsion of the Japanese neighborhood of Liberdade in 1942-43 and the resumption of ethnic neighborhood in the postwar period (racism, migration experience and occupation of the urban space)." Based on a research currently underway, the conference will deal with the expulsion of Japanese immigrants from the neighborhood of Liberdade, considered as an area of national security after the entry of Brazil in the war. On the one hand, the irreversible process generated the dispersion of the group through the city, away from the center towards the south: Vergueiro, Vila Mariana, Saude. On the other, the interval of the war was too short so that the link was broken and the district reverts to ethnic profile after the end of the conflict, but with different characteristics: the axis stops being the Conde de Sarzedas Street, moving to Galvão Bueno. Furthermore, and most importantly, the neighborhood is no longer a residential center, but only the institutional and professional/business center for japanese immigrants. Based on written sources and interviews with former inhabitants, I will try to redraw the time of the expulsions, the transformations in the neighborhood at the time and the experience of residents who suffered from the intervention of Vargas political police. I will come back to unresolved issues of this ongoing research, which sources are rare and deficient. EXPECTED BENEFITS of the VISIT: 1. continue the exchange with the Centre de Recherche sur le Brésil Contemporain (CRBC) and define a collective research project with researchers from the Graduate Program in History - Area Politics, Memories and the City; 2. Learn the research results brought by the researcher Monica Schpun; 3. Continue the dialogue between researchers in the field of History and Anthropology. 4. Set an agenda between researchers and students of graduate school. 5. Publication of two books with the papers submitted to the CBRC conducted seminars in December 2010 and 2011. (AU)
