Abstract

The placenta is central to pregnancy and can be highly determinative of pregnancy outcomes. In order to improve the health and care of women and children, the placenta is therefore very important to study scientifically. Placentas are regularly collected in hospitals around the world and utilized in scientific experiments as well as for the extraction and creation of various therapeutic tissue products. In general, there is little information on women's opinions of and experiences with placental donation. Objective: To ascertain the opinions of and level of support for placental donation of women who have given birth at the teaching Hospital da Mulher Prof. Dr. José Aristodemo Pinotti in Campinas, Brazil. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive study will be carried out with quantitative and qualitative approach. A cross-sectional study will be carried out with 384 women who have births in CAISM, are postpartum and whose baby is alive. Will be excluded from those who have difficulty reading and / or communication and to present some physical or psychological condition that interferes with understanding and provide answers. Data collection will be accomplished in the hospital by trained interviewers using a structured questionnaire. This instrument has 27 multiple choice questions and covers personal information, pregnancy and childbirth; questions about women's views and beliefs about the placenta and level of support of women for the donation of the placenta for scientific purposes. For the qualitative approach of the study, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with 10-15 women with the same characteristics of those who participate in the quantitative stage. These interviews will be conducted with a guide with questions to exploit in depth the views of women on the subject under study. Data analysis: Quantitative data will be entered into the database and descriptive analysis will be developed to describe the characteristics of the population studied and the results regarding the level of advice and support of women for the donation of the placenta. Will be estimated means and standard deviations standard and / or median and range for continuous variables and frequencies and percentages for nominal variables. Multivariate analysis with logistic regression will be performed to assess the factors related to the opinions and level of support of women for the donation of placenta. The significance level is 5%. The semi-structured interviews will be transcribed, and thematic content analysis will be held. For the results' interpretation, the quantitative and qualitative analysis will be compared and discussed in light of literature. (AU)
