Treatment of subclinical mastitis in sheep during the dry period with conventional and nanoparticle antimicrobials

Abstract

The mastitis is considered an obstacle to the sheep productiom due to economic losses. Methods of control for the disease in Brazilian herds are little studied and there are no treatment protocols appropriate to the ovine species. The purpose os this study is to establish treatment protocol against subclinical mastitis on the basis of intramammary infusion of antimicrobial active ingredient in time of drying of meat sheep, in different dosages. The efficiency of cloxacillin will be determined for microbiological cure of subclinical mastitis, in two different dosages in conventional form, 600 mg and 100 mg, and in the nanoparticulate form (100 mg). The experiment will be carried out in an experimental herd, using 75 sheep. Clinical examinations will be performed in the structures of teats and milk samples will be collected for diagnosis of subclinical mastitis by using California Mastitis Test (CMT) and somatic cell count (SCC). The confirmation of the results will be performed with the use of microbiological culture before and after the treatments, which will be distributed in the following experimental groups: G1 (positive control); G2 (negative control); G3 (infusion on 600 mg of cloxacillin); G4 (infusion of 100 mg of cloxacillin); G5 (100 mg of cloxacillin nanoparticulate). The results will be analyzed using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test, in dependence of the values found, to compare cure rates in different groups. (AU)
