Croton L. (Euphorbiaceae Juss.): secondary metabolites and biological activity

Abstract

Croton L., Euphorbiaceae Juss., comprises about 1,300 species of plants, widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Many of them are quite known for their therapeutic use in traditional medicine for the treatment of various ailments such as digestive disorders, inflammation, diabetes, and others. The chemistry of Croton is very diverse. The most common constituents are diterpenoids with different skeletons, as clerodanes, labdanes and podocarpanos. Volatile oils are very common and various species have latex rich in proantociadines, or in some species, proanthocyanidins and alkaloids. Croton alkaloids are similar to those found in Ranunculales as isoboldina and glaucina; flavonoids, mostly, are highly methoxylated aglycones, as artemetin. Since 2009, Laboratory of Phytochemistry (IB-USP) has been working with the screening of substances in hexane, dichloromethane and methanol from Croton native species to perform assays of antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiproliferative. As preliminary results, sections Cleodora (Klotzch) Baill. and Cyclostigma Griseb showed species with potential bioactive substances. This proposal has as main objective the monitored isolation and identification of diterpenes and phenolic compounds of leaves and stems of three Brazilian endemic species: C. vulnerarius Baill., C. echinocarpus Baill. and C. sphaerogynus Baill., investigating their bioactive activities: antioxidant, antiproloferative, anti-HIV and antimicrobial.
