Abstract

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is an infectious disease caused by HIV, which is able to induce morphological and cytological changes in oral squamous epithelial cells. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate oral mucosa changes caused by HIV infection studying inflammatory activity, cell maturation and morphological changes of the oral mucosa cells from HIV + patients compared to non-infected ones; to try to establish a relationship with early changes of oral carcinogenesis. Material and Method: 30 HIV + individuals undergoing treatment from the clinic of infectious diseases, Hospital Heliopolis, São Paulo and 30 non-infected from the Department of Bioscience and Oral Diagnosis, São José dos Campos Dental School, UNESP will be evaluated. 04 oral smears from the left side of the tongue and mouth floor will be collected with cytobrush. 02 will be stained by Papanicolaou and 02 by Feulgen method. Microscopic analysis of Papanicolaou smears and the measurement of the nuclear (NA) and cytoplasmic (CA) areas using the program Axion 4.7 Carl Zeiss Vison will be held. In smears stained for Feulgen, MN will be evaluated in minimum of 1200 cells. Statistical analysis will be held by Student's t-test and ANOVA for parametric data of single samples, and Kruskall Wallis for non-parametric data. (AU)
