Stress at work and licit drugs abuse among workers from a public university

Abstract

The abusive consumption of substances, such as alcohol and tobacco, affect not only the relations with work, but also relations with social context and family. Moreover, it is risk factors for various physical injuries and accidents. Alcohol is a common substance of abuse among workers, is the third cause of absenteeism at work, the most frequent cause of early retirements and accidents at work, and the eighth cause for the granting of aid by Brazilian retirement institution. Similarly, it is the high consumption of tobacco among workers. Some occupations are more closely related to higher consumption of these substances, which risk factors linked to the work would be related to the specificity of the occupation, the conditions in which a particular work is done, the type of stress and how these agents operate in the physical and psychological worker. Thus, this study aims to identify the use of alcohol, tobacco and the levels of stress at work among workers from a public university. Specifically, it proposes to verify the pattern of consumption of alcoholic beverages and tobacco in this population, identify the presence of stress related to work, socio-demographic factors related to the consumption of alcoholic drinks and tobacco and to the stress at work, relate different levels of stress at work to the consumption of alcoholic beverages and tobacco; verify the interest of users of alcohol and tobacco to participate in prevention programs, treatment and decreasing damage. For this quantitative, descriptive and exploratory will be used questionnaires to identify socioeconomic characteristics, stress at work (Job Stress Scale), alcohol use (AUDIT) and smoking (Fagerström Inquiry). The population is about 1.749 non-professor workers from University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto Campus.
