Utilization of sugarcane bagasse for environmental remediation of acid mine drainage

Abstract

This Research Project aims to study and quantify in the laboratory the performance of bioremediation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using sugarcane bagasse as main carbon-source substrate for bacterial sulfate reduction, which is an application for which this ligno-cellulosic residue has not yet been tested. The final field application envisioned is "green environmental remediation" in Permeable Reactive Barriers and Zones. The Project will comprise (a) laboratory tests, (b) comparative literature review on bioremediation of AMD in sulfate reducing systems, and (c) mathematical modeling of the test results, for calibration of model parameters. The laboratory tests will include chemical and structural characterization of residues (i.e., organic carbon, cellulose, hemi-cellulose and lignin contents, and nutrients N, P, K, S), permeability tests on mixtures of sugarcane bagasse and sand, and batch and column tests. Batch and column tests will be carried out under different experimental conditions and will allow to quantify, among other effects, the effects of (i) addition of nitrogen (N) using the solid residue "discarded poultry bedding mixture", not yet tested for this purpose, (ii) addition of bacterial inoculum using cattle manure, and (iii) the introduction in the tests of different amounts of an iron rich soil (i.e., dark-red oxisol from São Paulo state) on the performance of sulfate reduction and heavy-metal precipitation. The results from this Research Project will significantly contribute to the advance of the state of knowledge on biological remediation of AMD using Brazilian residues as substrates and nutrient sources, as well as in the presence of an iron rich soil as usually is the case in the geological context of tropical soils in Brazil.
