Abstract

In the 80 years the Brazilian purpuric fever epidemic outbreaks swept through the region of Ribeirao Preto in São Paulo, causing several deaths and having a bacterium as the etiologic agent. This bacterium was only related to cases of bacterial conjunctivitis (where often associated with Haemophilus influenzae biotype aegyptius) and suddenly showed a strain of Haemophilus influenzae septicemic, which is a rare event. Such outbreaks, for unknown reasons, were happily quenched, probably due to the immediate clinical attention received cases however, the question of which one (s) number (s) factor (s) of virulence of this bacterium are involved in the pathophysiology of Brazilian purpuric fever , or where they come from the genes responsible for these virulence factors have not been well elucidated. Later, at the end of 90 years much has been said about horizontal gene transfer between major human pathogenic bacteria to upper respiratory tract has its main entrance as Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae, especially after the publication of Swartley et al. (1997) on the capsule switching in N. meningitidis. In 1998, Kroll et al. described the genetic transfers between the three main pathogens described above and hypothesizes that Haemophilus influenzae biotype aegyptius Brazilian purpuric fever causes, is a result of gene transfer of N. meningitidis (causing septic shock) with strains of H. influenzae (which does not cause disseminated intravascular clotting process). We propose a better understanding of these genetic lineages (through sequencing the whole genome of two of them and make any analysis of protein expression in different culture conditions in vitro and in vivo.
