Selection criteria for economic importance traits in Santa Inês sheep


The aim of this study is determine measurements that are indicative of resistance to parasites in Santa Inês sheep and estimate genetic parameters for eye scores (ES), fecal egg counts (FEC) and packed cell volume (PCV) and estimate genetic parameters for productive and reproductive traits and the association between these traits with ES, FEC and PCV. The project will be developed in the southeastern region of Brazil. The data of traits indicative for resistance to nematode parasites will be held by a trained person in different ages, each 30 days interval. Previous data sets recorded by breeders will be collected for the following traits: age at first calving, calving interval, and weights in different ages, scrotal circumference and prolificacy. The variance components for productive and reproductive traits, and resistance to nematode parasites will be estimated by restricted maximum likelihood (REML) using MTDFREML (Boldman et al., 1993), WOMBAT (Meyer, 2006) e Bayesian inference using THRGIBBS2F90 (Misztal et al., 2002) package.
