Abstract

Over the years the plants have been increasingly exploited as a source of biologically active compounds. The lack of knowledge about the phitochemical constituents' interactions on biological material can lead to poisonings, disorders on the cellular organization level and on the genetic material in humans. The Euterpe oleracea Mart, popularly known as "açaí", is native from the Amazon region. It is used in folk medicine as an antidiarrheal, for the treatment of anemia, as antihelmintic, astringent and anti-hemorrhagic. Scientific studies on this plant reported anti-inflammatory and antimalarial action, cellular antiproliferative activity and apoptotic, as well as beneficial effects against cardiovascular diseases. Based on the fact that the oil of Euterpe oleracea (OEO) has been traditionally used for medicinal purposes by humans, it is necessary to investigate the toxicological potential of the OEO in relation to the genome and the constitution of mammalian cells. Then, this project was designed to evaluate the cytotoxic, genotoxic, antigenotoxic and antioxidant potential of the oil of Euterpe oleracea in vitro (using human cells - lymphocytes) and in vivo (on different somatic and germ cells of Wistar rats). It will also be investigated the possibility of cellular changes in the liver and thyroid of rats treated with the oil, through histological, ultra-structural, biochemical and hematological analysis in vivo after its administration. This project´s development will allow the implementation of the methodology in our Laboratory of the comet assay nucleoids analysis using TriTek CometScoreTM Freware v1.5 software, as well as to take photograph of the histologic preparations made in collaboration with the UNESP, Rio Claro laboratory, aiming a better characterization of the cytotoxic effects of the compounds.
