Establishment of procedures for cleaning of different surfaces household exposed to syrup malathion used in Aedes aegypti control

Abstract

The dengue is a viral infection transmitted by female of mosquito Aedes aegypti, which can be vector of yellow fever too. Although the yellow fever has been eliminated in most major cities, the Aedes aegypti did not eliminated of the country. With the industrialization, in the years 40s, news breeding, as tires and scrap-metal began to be available to mosquito. Moreover, the disordered migration of the people of the field to the city providing increased of shelter to this insects. These factors, together with weak politic of public health allowed the reappearance of the Aedes aegypti in the cities and the occurrence of new dengue epidemics. The absence of vaccine that. enable the immunization of exposure population combined with great adaptability of mosquito to urban environment, difficult the control of this endemic. The mosquito control involves the population orientation to elimination of possible breeding, the environmental management and the insecticides application to reduce the number of larvae and adult mosquito. The Ministério da Saúde recommends the use of chemical control of the vector in larvae and adult phases with insecticides, mainly, pyrethroides and organophosphates, foremost among these the malathion and fenitrothion, that are used in high concentration. Nowadays, in São Paulo city, and many other cities of the country, is used the organophosphate malathion technical grade (TG) 96% in soy-oil (1:2, v/v) to produce the syrup of application to control adult mosquito. The chemical is applied indoor and outdoor house by mechanical pressurizing of short-range (ultra low volume). The drops stay a determinated time in suspension and end up depositing in the different surfaces in a house, which must be removed by proper cleaning and security to human health. In research developed between 2009 and 2012, with Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo - FAPESP financing (project n° 09/52959-4) to available the retention capacity of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and the presence of the malathion residues in water washing of these clothes, it was observed that does not exist information about the cleaning of environmental indoor after malathion application. The Zoonosis Agents and the Technicians have doubt about as to guide the cleaning so that is secure to person's health and effective procedure. To guide with security the population, to minimize the exposure risks, it is necessary the establishment of cleaning procedures of different surfaces exposed to malathion syrup. So, this work proposes to establish cleaning procedures to different surfaces indoor exposed to malathion syrup and provide techniques information to population in sites for free. For this, different surfaces, as wood, formica, cement cloth and plastic will be exposed to malathion syrup in controlled laboratory environment and submitted to cleaning with water and soap. The residual water will be submitted to extraction procedures to malathion recuperation and the extracts will be analyzed by gas chromatography to detection and quantification of this active ingredient. The results will be compared with the same surface kinds exposed to syrup, but do not washed with water and soap. (AU)
