Abstract

On the international scenery, there is a clear discussion about the system of assessment, classification and diagnosis of personality disorders for the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM 5. In Brazil, researches on the assessment of personality disorders are scarce, and consequently there is little discussion in the area. Still, an instrument was developed for evaluation of pathological personality traits, which can be configured as personality disorders, the Inventário Dimensional Clínico da Personalidade (IDCP), based on theory of Theodore Millon and on DSM-IV axis II. This is an inventory composed of 215 items grouped into 12 dimensions (Dependency, Aggressiveness, Mood Instability, Eccentricity, Need for Attention, Mistrust, Grandiosity, Isolation, Avoiding Criticism, Self-sacrifice, Conscientiousness and Impulsivity), which should be completed using a 4-points Likert scale. On the one hand, the instrument showed adequate psychometric properties, being representative of the characteristics proposed by the theory of Millon and DSM-IV-TR. On the other hand, considering the contribution to the DSM 5, IDCP must be updated in accordance with the area. The present study aims to review the IDCP in accordance with the proposal of DSM 5 for evaluation of pathological personality traits. It is expected an instrument with adequate psychometric properties to represent the characteristics considered important by Millon theory, which provides the basis for the instrument, and the future version of the DSM.
