Abstract

The short bowel syndrome is a set of signs and symptoms resulting from nutritional and metabolic changes due to an extensive re-section of the small intestine, and represents one of the most severe clinical pictures of malabsorption. Little data is available about the real caloric needs of these patients, since the modification in health and physiological conditions affect directly the energy expenditure and thus its prediction by equations may be inadequate, affecting negatively the evolution of the patient. Hence, this project proposes to verify the total energy expenditure in patients with short bowel syndrome using the doubly labeled water method, as well as determining the rate of oxidation of nutrients, aiming to assist the management of nutritional therapy for these patients.
