Abstract

This study aims to produce a bioactive zirconia-fluorapatite composite material for potential bone applications. Bioactive fluorapatite-coated porous zircônia structures will be evaluated in terms of structural-mechanical and biological properties. These include volumetric fraction of porosity, dimensions and geometries of pores, fluorapatite surface roughness and porosity; the mechanical strength and elastic modulus will also be determined. The biological assays will include evaluation of cell viability, cell morphology and acquisition of the osteogenic phenotype in osteoblastic cell cultures grown on zirconia-fluorapatite structures.
