Abstract
Background: HCV infection affects approximately 2 million people in Brazil and several factors determine clinical outcome and response to treatment. Because similarities of transmission routes, other viruses can are also present in HCV-infected subjects, such as HTLV-1 infection. This retrovirus is also prevalent in Brazil, with approximately of one million people infected with HTLV-1. More recently, the profile of the IL28B polymorphism is important in the response to treatment and anti-HCV, however, HCV/HTLV co-infection was not assessed in Brazil. Major Objective: To evaluate the distribution of HCV infection in people living with HTLV-1 infection. Specific Objectives: 1) evaluate the profile of polymorphism haplotypes in this population, 2) Correlate the gene polymorphism IL28b with co-infection and HAM/TSP outcome, 3) Profile of gene IL28B polymorphism in the HTLV-1-infected subjects. Material and Methods: Between July 1997 and May 2011, 798 individuals who sought the outpatient service of HTLV Institute of Infectious Diseases "Emilio Ribas" in São Paulo. A total of 450 individuals were confirmed as positive for HTLV-1 and 120 co-infected with HCV infection. To assess the prevalence of HTLV-1, a group of 1500 patients with HCV be retrospectively analyzed and prospectively for detecting antibodies to HTLV-1 infection. The epidemiological data will be obtained directly from patients invited to participate voluntarily after reading and signing the inform consent. Patients will be evaluated by experts in HCV and / or HTLV. (AU)
