Abstract

The literature offers several factors that explain, in greater or lesser degree, the differential learning and proficiency among students. Rivkin et al (2005) highlights the importance of teacher effectiveness in the determination of school quality in contrast to other inputs used in education. In recent years, in Brazil, aiming to expand and improve the quality of provision of education, there have been a number of initiatives to expand the resources allocated to education and, in particular, for the remuneration of professionals working directly in public primary and secondary schools. The latest initiative was the establishment of a national minimum wage for these teachers.The objectives of this project are: first, to know about the compliance with the law and, second, to assess the impact of the wage increase on the quality of education, measured by student performance on a national proficiency test. Therefore, a field research will be carried out with municipals and states' secretary of education. The information dataset obtained in the field will be merged with SAEB data and School Census. The resulting database will make possible to estimate the impact of raising teachers' salary on the school proficiency by taking advantage of the institution of the national minimum wage. (AU)
