Abstract

This project aims to promote a global evaluation of biofuels sustainability, including their advantages, drawbacks, and the criteria to analyze their social, economic and environmental impacts. A synthesis volume and a Policy Brief, based on SCOPE's guidelines (an organization based at UNESCO which will help on the process), will be written with recommendations for public policies on sustainable expansion of biofuels. Technologies that lead to less pollution, lower energy consumption and decreased greenhouse gas emission for fuel production will be evaluated regarding their economic feasibility, the industry capacity for their implementation in scale and the short and long term impacts on the environment, human health and generation of wealth. In that sense, a roaster of national and international experts was gathered in a Scientific Committee, which will represent globally the several scientific topics to be covered during the Rapid Assessment Process (RAP). This committee will meet first in São Paulo on February 27th and 28th, 2013, at FAPESP, during the Scoping Meeting, which has as goal defining authors, experts and reviewers that will participate in the Rapid Assessment Process. The Scoping Meeting will be preceded by an international workshop organized by BIOEN, BIOTA and PFPMCG, in which we'll be collecting community's recommendations for policies that make feasible both sustainable production and use of biofuels. A second meeting and another international workshop will be held in Paris on November 2013, where authors and special invited guests will join to consolidate knowledge and recommendations. The final product of this project includes: a 300-page publication which synthesizes the performed evaluation; possible parallel publications, and the UNEP Policy Brief above mentioned. (AU)
