Biochemical indicators of micronutrient status and usual intakes of residents from the City of São Paulo - ISA-Capital Survey 2013

Abstract

The first data to show the prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake, in Brazil, revealed a great portion of the population whose habitual consumption is below the recommendations. However, it is not known if the high prevalence of inadequate intake within the population are, indeed, followed by high percentage of micronutrient deficiency. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the biochemical indicators of micronutrient status and usual intakes of adolescents, adults and elders residing in the city of São Paulo, aiming to obtain data on the distribution of these indicators at the population level, their deficiencies, and to deepen the discussion on food fortification and/or enrichment. This is a population-based cross-sectional study that will be conducted in São Paulo in 2013, of 1363 individuals of both sexes age 12 and older. Social, demographic, and economic data and also data on lifestyle, anthropometric measurements, and venous blood samples will be collected. The dietary survey will be performed using a 24-hour dietary recall administered on two separate occasions. The blood samples will be analyzed for assessment on vitamin A, B6, B12, C, E, folate and iron status. 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) will be calculated in order to compare the prevalence of inadequacy according to demographic, anthropometric, social and economic variables. The percentage of individuals deficient in one or more micronutrients will be estimated based on the cutoff points suggested by the existing scientific literature. Usual intake of micronutrients within the deficient and non-deficient groups will be estimated and compared with the dietary recommendations (EAR method). (AU)
