Optical control of magnetic order will be investigated in various materials. Our previous resultsshowed that, in non-magnetic semiconductor quantum dots containing electrons, light can inducemagnetic order, due to the electron-photon interaction, which brings about the alignment, alonga preferential direction, of the spin of the electrons confined in the dots. Our previous results also showed that in magnetic semiconductors (built from atoms with a non-zero magnetic moment), theelectron-photon interaction can lead to a sequence of events, whose final result is the alignmentof the atomic spins along a preferential direction. The aim of this project is to clarify what are theprecise mechanisms and processes involved in the induction of magnetic order in both cases. An understandingof these mechanisms is essential for the application of these materials in spintronic devices. In thisproject funds are requested for the acquisition of: (1) equipment required to perform new experiments; (2) equipment required for the maintenance of the existing laboratory; (3) consumables required to perform experiments.
