Abstract

Several research activities in the Laboratório de Espectroscopia Molecular, Instituto de Química, Universidade de São Paulo, LEM/IQ-USP, are related with infrared and Raman spectroscopy of condensed phases, such as interfaces, colloids, electrodes, molecular and ionic liquids, molecular probes in non-aqueous solvents, polymers, carbon nanotubes etc. In this research project, spectroscopic properties (e.g. signal enhancement) and physicochemical properties (conductivity, structural heterogeneity, solvation etc.) resulting from intermolecular interactions in condensed phases will be considered in different studies. The parameters responsible for signal enhancement in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) will be investigated as they are related to interactions between the molecule and the SERS active sites. In case of very low concentrations, the analysis of intensity fluctuations at different sites of the surface will be based on frequency shifts, and also on relative intensity and bandwidth, since such fluctuations are due to interactions between the molecule and the surface and solvent. This work aims the development of surfaces of controlled size and shape exhibiting high enhancement ability, the study of photochemical reactions taking place on nanoparticles and morphology of polymers, and development of selective sensors. The research activities related to structure and dynamics of liquids include molecular and ionic liquids, supercritical and supercooled liquids, and solute - solvent interactions including gases solvation in ionic liquids. Frequency shift and Raman bandshape, which are due to vibrational and reorientational relaxation processes in the liquid phase, will be investigated as a function of temperature and pressure. The analysis of vibrational spectra of liquids will be complemented by molecular dynamics computer simulations. (AU)
