Abstract

The visiting research fellow will collaborate with the project "Eficind - Prospective study of energy efficiency potential", under development at Unicamp's Center for Energy Studies (NIPE) in cooperation with five important universities in Brazil and financed by Finep (processo nº 01 10 050300). The research project has as objective to define a methodoly - including the schematic representation of technologies, processes and actions - which could be used by federal energy agencies to obtain long- run estimates of technical, economic and market energy efficiency potentials in the industrial and services sectors and to identify existing barriers to their realization. Gürkan Kumbarolu will significantly contribute to the study by sharing his expertise obtained in several works on energy efficiency he has been involved with at Boaziçi University in Turkey. The main objective of his work at NIPE/Unicamp will be to implement a benchmarking basis to analyze the performance of Brazil's energy-intensive sectors in comparison to several other countries. As such, the research will start by defining the system boundary, establishing the database and computing the specific energy consumption levels for various sector and countries in different stages of development. The analytical tool is based on the specific energy consumption using the best available technology and will be employed to estimate the energy efficiency improvement potential while taking into account the differences in the structure of the productive processes. The Eficind project will benefit a great deal from this international perspective, mainly by showing how the Brazilian economy can compete with other countries in seeking more sustainable ways of development.
