Abstract

The study of detrital minerals, specially the zircon, has been established as an extremely useful approach on the interpretation of the composition and history of modern and ancient sediments. Regarding the Paraná Basin, provenance studies are still in a reduced number, despite its enormous dimension and thickness, with sedimentary rocks that represent various depositional settings. Thus, its history and evolution are still poorly known, including its origin. This project aims to use the U-Pb geochronology on detrital zircon and from volcanic ash-beds, if found, to obtain depositional age and provenance constraints of the units outcropping in "Coluna White" region, Santa Catarina State, in order to better understand the origin and depositional history of the Paraná Basin, one of the most important records of Gondwana available in the planet. Sm/Nd (TDM) model ages will be determined on whole rock samples to help on the identification of source areas, and Hf isotopes on zircons will permit to identify crustal and juvenile components. All the isotopic data will be associated with other available data in the literature about the provenance of these sedimentary strata, as palaeoflow, palaeowind, glacial striae, and isopach maps. The combined analysis will allow a robust palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the studied region. (AU)
