Determination of the crop coefficient (KC) for tropical forages on single cropping and on oversown with temperate forage crops

Abstract

This research project is proposed in order to determine the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) of some tropical forage crops, on single cropping and oversown with temperate forage crops, and its relation with the reference evapotranspiration (ETo), aiming to contribute for the knowledge about the water consumption of these crops, and to help on the correct irrigation management. It will be studied the water consumption of Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça, Cynodon sp. cv. Tifton 85, and the water consumption of these forage crops when oversown with oats (Avena strigosa Scherb) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The crop evapotranspiration (ETc) will be obtained with the use of weighing lysimeters. The reference evapotranspiration (ETo) will be obtained with the Penman-Monteith method, with measurements of climate parameters made by an automatic meteorological station placed near the experimental area. The values obtained will be used to estimate the relation between ETc and ETo, aiming to determine the crop coefficients (Kc) of the forage crops on the studied cropping systems. The crop coefficient (Kc) will be related to the plant development, mainly expressed by the leaf area index (IAF), along the regrowth cycles, according to the number of days after cutting (forage resting period). Furthermore, it will be studied the relation between the crop coefficient and the parameters that consider the available environmental energy, as degree-days (GD) and phototermal units (UF). (AU)
