Abstract

When compared to tropical forests, the amount of remote sensing studies in sub-tropical forests is much smaller. The Parque Estacional do Turvo (PET), located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, has one of the largest preserved forest fragments of Seasonal Deciduous Forest at submontane position from south Brazil. The objective of this study is to combine data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS/Terra) (moderate spatial resolution and high temporal resolution) and from the RapidEye (high spatial resolution) to study intra- and inter-annual variations (2000-2013) in reflectance and vegetation indices in the PET. The relationships of these data with biophysical (Leaf Area Index - LAI) and biochemical (chlorophyll content) parameters of the vegetation will be analyzed. Because both MODIS and RapidEye acquire images not necessarily at nadir viewing, the consistency of this analysis will be evaluated using the radiative transfer model PROSAIL. The PROSAIL will be calibrated with field/lab information and will simulate distinct configurations of data acquisition and seasonal variations in canopy attributes. The launching of RapidEye, with a new band positioned at the red edge potentially sensitive to chlorophyll, represents an innovation in sensor design. Despite the differences in spatial resolution, the combined use of MODIS and RapidEye data is a unique opportunity for a better comprehension of the intra- and inter-annual variations in the canopy spectral attributes of sub-tropical forests.
