Abstract

This proposal, submitted by the Supramolecular Nanotech Lab of the University of Sao Paulo, focuses on the development of new functional molecular and combined supermolecule-nanoparticle hybrid systems, as well as of their corresponding functional films, aiming applications in sensors, energy conversion and electronic nanotechnological devices. The Research Group conducted by Profs. Henrique E. Toma and Koiti Araki, comprises more than 20 graduate, undergraduate and post-doctoral researchers, and is strongly dedicated to the development of molecular nanotechnology, a mission which has been very successful thanks to the renewed support from FAPESP. The major achievements have been concentrated on the supramolecular chemistry of porphyrins, porphyrazines and related macrocycles, metal clusters and metal-polyimine complexes, as well as on their many applications in bioinorganic chemistry and advanced materials. It is also pursued the development of hetero-hybrid materials displaying outstanding functionality for nanotechnological applications, combining the supramolecular strategies and the exciting properties of metal (e.g. silver and gold) and metal-oxide (e. g., TiO2, V2O5 and Fe3O4) nanoparticles. In addition to the strong emphasis on supramolecular design and synthetic chemistry, the proposal also focuses on the investigation of fundamental and relevant spectroscopic, photochemical, electrochemical and catalytic properties, using a large variety of techniques, including scanning probe microscopy, surface plasmon resonance and confocal Raman spectroscopy.
