Abstract

Considering the importance of both morphological and anatomical data to complement taxonomic studies of Poales, this project aims to study the morphology and anatomy of some Bromeliaceae, Cyperaceae, Eriocaulaceae, Poaceae, Rapateaceae, and Xyridaceae species. These families were choosen because most of their species occur exclusively in Brazil, making them an interesting model for multi-disciplinary biological studies. The search for new and varied sources of morphological and anatomical data of the vegetative (root, stem, leaf) and reprodutive (floral anatomy, embryology, seed, and pollination mechanisms) organs of some species of these families is very important. Thus, they are necessary for developing the taxonomy and phylogeny of this group. Numerous field trips will be conducted, in order to get field data and biological material, as well as extensive laboratory research, where the material will be processed. Microscope slides will be prepared for data analysis, interpretation and documentation. With the results obtained in this project, we hope to characterize the anatomy of the vegetative and the reprodutive organs of these choosen species. In addition, these results might be used to complement database for future cladistical analyses in Poales (commelinids), seeking a more natural and consistent delimitation of their taxa. (AU)
