Use of Aviris hyperspectral data in the reflectance characterization of tropical soils

Abstract

Data collected in 224 bands (400-2500 nm) by the hyperspectral AVIRIS (Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer) instrument from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL/NASA), with spatial resolution of 20 meters, will be used to characterize the spectral reflectance of different soil types in a study area located close to the Campo Verde City (Mato Grosso State). A spectral mixture model will be applied to differentiate the major scene components. For endmember selection, a semi-automated procedure based on the sequential use of the Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF) and Pixel Purity Index (PPI) techniques will be used. From the soil fraction image, a mask will be created for the subsequent application of the mineral detection techniques Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) and Spectral Feature Fitting (SFF) for the identification in the scene of iron oxides (e.g, goethite and hematite) and clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite and montimorillonite). Correlation coefficients between laboratory reflectance data and soil constituents (e.g., organic matter, total iron, Al2O3, SiO2) will be calculated, as a function of wavelength. Finally, the spectral response of some multispectral sensors will be simulated from AVIRIS data to verify the spectral resolution influence on the discrimination of soil types. The AVIRIS Campaign in Brazil is still one of the most valuable hyperspectral set of images in the world, which requires continuous evaluation to demonstrate the potential use of this technology for different applications such as the study of mapping and discrimination of tropical soils.
