Abstract
The advances of the last few years in the municipal and industrial wastewater biological treatment have been supported by basic and applied research involving mainly the fundamental aspects of the processes and the development of innovative bioreactors. A sound and thorough knowledge of the basic phenomena, together with the development of the engineering of biological reactors have opened new lines of research aiming at recovering energy and products from wastewater in anaerobic or combined reactors (anaerobic-aerobic) based on the cycle of carbon, sulfur, and phosphorous. This approach allows considering wastewater a raw material for a biotechnological process that can generate energy and products with high aggregated value besides meeting its primary goal of controlling environmental pollution. Thus, based on this approach the members of this Thematic Project aim at evaluating the energy generation in anaerobic reactors in the form of hydrogen and methane, investigating the applicability of the biohydrogen in fuel cells, applying the methane generated in methanogenic reactors as a raw material for the production of dimethyl ether, and at the environmental adequacy of the effluents and residues generated in bioenergy generation systems from wastewater.
