Abstract

The contamination of soils and water with metals has created a major environmental problem, leading to considerable losses in plant productivity and hazardous health effects. Exposure to toxic metals can intensify the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are continuously produced in both unstressed and stressed plants cells. Some of the ROS species are highly toxic and must be detoxified by cellular stress responses, if the plant is to survive and grow. The aim of this work is to assess the mode of action and role of antioxidants in protecting tomato and soybean plants from stress caused by the presence of toxic metals. The major aspects that will be addressed are the biochemical and morphological responses and accumulation of the metals in different tissues of plants. Emerging techniques in new field of metallomics that have greatly improved the identification, localization and quantification of metals within plant tissues will be used to help increasing our understanding of the biological and environmental problems related to toxic metals. Among the toxic metals, cadmium (Cd) and aluminum (AI) can be considered important environmental contaminants related to commercial rejection of crops, besides to become dangerous to human health. Currently there is a great concern with respect to short and long term effects that these toxic metals may cause on public health and the environment. The study of the antioxidant response of tomato plants in the presence of Cd and Al is important for the understanding of tolerance mechanisms, as well as for the characterization of plants used in the process of phytoremediation of contaminated environments.
