This project is to investigate the chemical and pharmacological properties of natural substances isolated and purified from marine sponges and tunicates. The work program is organized with interdisciplinary collaboration foccusing taxonomy, chemistry and pharmacology to analyze selected chemicals from known and unknown marine species of sponges and ascidians found in the coast of São Paulo State, Brazil. They are important animals in the marine biodiversity. The taxonomical approach will follow the systematic agenda 2000, such as faunistic survey, natural taxonomy and the up to date data will be published via Internet. Behavioral observations in the field such as, absence of epibionts, lack of predation will be made in order to find cues for high levels of biological activity. The experimental approach will be the systematic investigation of actions of organic extracts or purified and identified compounds in laboratory animals, organs, tissues and cells to define the profiles of biological activity and possible mechanisms of action. Neurotoxicity, cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activity wil be the main tests to be made. The data obtained from this screening research are being critically evaluated to determine if we follow up these studies in terms of mechanisms of actions or discontinue it. Sometimes there are substances of potential therapeutic and chemotaxotonomic values or of important role on chemical communication in the marine environment. (AU)
