Development, production and post-harvest of new bananas cultivars under different fertilization levels

Abstract

Banana requires for its development and production adequate amounts of nutrients readily available. The real nutritional needs for the new banana cultivars recently developed is-not knew. These cultivars must have resistance or tolerance to pests and diseases, high productivity and/or fruits with good post-harvest characteristics. There are no studies that evaluated the response of these cultivars to fertilization, as well as their behavior in post- harvest, therefore, this study aims to evaluate the development, production and post-harvest of eight banana cultivars at different fertilization levels. The experimental design in field will be in randomized blocks in factorial scheme 8x4 (cultivars x fertilization level) with three replications and four plants per replication. The experimental design at the laboratory will be completely randomized, keeping the same field treatments, with three replicates of four fruits each. The evaluated cultivars are: Prata-Ana, BRS Platina, PA94-01, Grand Naine, IAC 2001, FHIA 17, BRS Princesa and Caipira, and the fertilization levels: no fertilization, 50%, 100% and 150% of the recommended amount of N and K. It will be evaluated: soil chemical properties, leaves nutrient content, plant height, pseudostem diameter, leaf number, tiller number, vegetative and productive cycle, fresh weight, number of bunches and total number of fruits per bunch, fresh weight and number of fruits in the 2nd hand, 2nd hand fruit length and diameter and in post-harvest it will be evaluated in fruits: skin color, weight loss, firmness, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity and starch. It is expected to suit the fertilization level for these new genotypes' reducing production costs and inserting' these new materials in the market with a technology package that maximizes the production and fruit quality.
