Abstract

Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent type of malignant neoplasia among women worldwide, with an incidence of 17.540 in the year of 2012. Nowadays, in Brazil, the screening for cervical cancer uses the Papanicolaou test, with the Bethesda System for classification. The cases identified as atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC) are a diagnostic challenge, with more than one third of the high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) identified from ASC- US Pap tests results, however, only 5 to 10% of these cases correspond to high grade lesions. In European and North America countries, the detection exam for high grade Human Papillomavirus DNA (HPV) with Hybrid Capture is part of the Screening Program, as a triage method and follow-up indicator for the ASC cases. In SUS, nowadays, the ASC cases are referred to Pap smear repetition in six months and, after a similar result, to colposcopy. The present study intends to evaluate the Hybrid Capture for high risk HPV performance in the cervical cancer screening program of SUS. Samples from patients with diagnosis of ASC referred to the Main Hospital of Vale do Ribeira will be collected to detection of high risk HPV. With.jhis technique, it expects to reduce the number of unnecessary colposcopies and the time for diagnosis of HSIL after an result, assuring the screening program success. (AU)
