Reuse of the culture medium of Arthrospira platensis using physical-chemical treatments

Abstract

Artrosphira (Spirulina) platensis, photosynthetic cyanobacteria, has a particular composition of biomass that includes high protein content (50-70%), polyunsaturated fatty acids, natural pigments and many other substances of interest in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. The reuse of the effluent obtained after cultivation, besides to reduce the cost of nutrients, considers the environmental aspect, since the effluent can not be released into the environment without treatment because it could cause the phenomenon of eutrophication as well as the soil salinization. There are no studies in the literature aiming to evaluate the possibility of reuse through the cultivation of Arthrospira spp. This project aims to study physico-chemical treatments of the effluent obtained at the end of the cultivation of A. platensis using different nitrogen sources and photobioreactors in order to reuse the treated effluent in new cultures of this microorganism. The parameters maximum cell concentration, cell productivity and yield of biomass on nitrogen as well as the composition of biomass will be studied aiming to evaluate the growth conditions and the properties of the biomass produced in the reused media.
