Impact of extreme rainfall in the ABC paulista: climate and socioeconomic vulnerability

Abstract

The aim of this project is to construct an index to assess the impacts of extreme rainfall over the region of ABC Paulista. Extreme rainfall causes floods and flooding in vulnerable areas and risk. The impact of extreme rain should be differentiated for each city, because each of these has a specific socioeconomic and climate vulnerability. The research begins with the build of the climatology of extreme rainfall events and their impacts (overflow, and flooding) for each city in the ABC Paulista. Later be creating an index of vulnerability to climate extreme rainfall events and index of social vulnerability, with demographic, economic and urbanization indicators. We expect to obtain a synthetic measure that quantifies the impact of an extreme rain event, based on the vulnerability and socio-economic climate of each cities of ABC Paulista. Additionally, we will try to characterize the regional atmospheric pattern that contributes to extreme rainfall events. The impact assessment enables the identification of higher risk areas which serves to decision makers can define measures for prevention, mitigation and adaptation. (AU)
