Atmospheric emissions from sugarcane producing regions are rapidly changing in the State of São Paulo. On the one hand, foliage burning is decreasing, reducing emission from biomass burning; on the other hand, the growing use of agricultural machinery is likely to increase the emissions from soil re-suspension. Because aerosol emissions and their chemical composition are undergoing fast modification in these regions, the solubility of the particulate material present in the low troposphere is seeing many alterations, which could have unknown implications to climate. The so-called 'second-generation' ethanol, obtained from cellulose, will increase the offer of this fuel; consequently, emissions linked to its use will also rise, impacting the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. This project proposes to evaluate the current behavior of organic species (organic N; formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, ethanol, acetate, formate, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), volatile-DOC) and inorganic species (major ions), dissolved in the rainwater of Ribeirão Preto. We aim to better know into the intensity of the regional emissions, their sources, and the chemical alterations that might happen in the low troposphere. There are very few studies about wet deposition of organic compounds in Brazil, especially in agricultural regions with intensive biomass burning. We intend to better understand the role played by the atmosphere as a reservoir of carbon and nitrogen in a sugarcane producing region and to find out how the atmosphere can change due to future governmental policies on ethanol fuel use and production in Brazil.
