Analysis of the population structure of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) using microsatellite markers and wing morphometry

Abstract

Vectors of agent of diseases associated with humans expanded their territory, leading to the introduction of mosquito species causing epidemics in new areas. A better understanding of the genetic structure of mosquito populations can help anticipate the distribution of mosquito-borne diseases and have key role in epidemiological interventions. Microsatellite markers and morphometric analysis of wings can be used to analyze the genetic structure of populations of mosquitoes. Previous results of our group using these markers indicate that there must be significant differences between populations of mosquitoes collected in the ten parks in the present study, since present distinct ecosystems. After the monthly collections made between March 2011 and February 2012, in seven parks (Anhanguera, Alfredo Volpi, Carmo, Chico Mendes, Ibirapuera, Santo Dias and Shangrilá), and between August 2012 and July 2013 in three parks (Piqueri, Previdência and Burle Marx) during the a project on biodiversity of mosquitoes in municipal parks of São Paulo (FAPESP Project 2010/51230-8) it was verified that the species Culex quinquefasciatus, Cx. nigripalpus, Aedes fluviatilis, Ae. scapularis and Ae. albopictus were collected in all parks showing relatively high abundances. Whereas such areas showed varying degrees of diversity and, therefore, may differ in terms of epidemiological importance and due to the epidemiological importance and abundance of five species mentioned, this project was designed as a continuation of the biodiversity project, selecting the five species of mosquitoes for population analysis using microsatellite markers and morphometry of the wings.
