Abstract

The broad objective of this study is to examine the impact of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam on the regional environment, economy, and health of the human population. It will also constitute a contribution to the area of science known as Human Ecology or environmental social science. The study does not represent an isolated case study because 147 other dams are planned in the Amazon Basin, 69 of them in the Brazilian Amazon. Many countries see dams as a solution to their energy needs. The themes to be investigated represent challenges to science: how to respond to the rapid increase in infectious disease, to the rapid increase in the human population with its accompanying sanitation, residential space, and food supply problems. How to respond to the charging employment situation in the area? And how to address the changes in land use and investment in regional development? How to guarantee long term sustainable development? The project will use innovative methods such as re-interviews via cellphone each year to address the high mobility of the population studied, and it will use high resolution satellite remote sensing images to quantify the changes in land use and the changing settlement patterns. The results will have immediate utility to local agencies who are eager to see the results and reduce the risks to the population from this boom/bust situation particularly in the areas of health and regional planning of services.
