Abstract

Among all the factors that must be taken into consideration in the category of equine health, parasitism is a major concern due to the damage caused by subsequent gastrointestinal parasites. The indiscriminate use of drugs in an attempt to combat these parasites lead to the emergence of anthelmintic resistance, which represents a growing problem in animal production. Given the lack of information related to the presence of anthelmintic resistance in equine herds in the state of Sao Paulo and the alarming situation of resistance in Brazil and in the world, the aim of this study is to detect the presence of anthelmintic resistance in herds of horses in the western region of São Paulo / Brazil. For this purpose, major classes of commonly used anthelmintics will be evaluated: benzimidazoles (Fenbendazole), avermectin (ivermectin) and milbemycins (moxidectin) paste applied orally. The distribution of animals in groups will be carried out homogeneously, as the values of the egg counts per gram of feces (OPG) and experimental animals. The evaluation will be accomplished in animals from 10 farms by OPG method, and coprocultures for identifying parasites. The results will be analyzed by the percentage reduction in the number of eggs per gram of feces (R-OPG) using the RESO program. A survey is also made on the characteristics of properties for obtaining data to be used in the analysis of the results. (AU)
