Abstract

The sludge generated in water treatment plants (ETA 's) presents a variable composition according to the raw water origin and composition treated in the process, in addition to the chemicals added during treatment. The availability of such waste is a problem that needs solving, because the presence of heavy metals in sludge increases the risk of contamination of the physical environment, especially soil and groundwater. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the environmental effects caused by the provision of ETA Taiaçupeba sludge in soil and water table aquifer. To this end, we will be holding the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the sludge (in nature, provisions on the ground and deposited into the reservoir), soil and analysis of surface water (rivers and reservoir) and groundwater (with focus on heavy metals) by ICP-MS or EOS, x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction and selective extractions. Environmental assessment will be made by comparing the results with the Guiding Values for Soil Water in the State of São Paulo (CETESB, 2005), Federal Environmental Legislation (CONAMA no 357/2005).
