Functional Biohybrid materials based on layered and/or fibrous natural clays with multifaceted applications

Abstract

The functional properties of hybrid materials obtained from grafting procedures into layered or fibrous clays attract the interest of various areas such as heterogenous catalysis, adsorption, eletrochemical sensors and among others. The insertion of organic substances in the interlayer spaces of clays promotes the formation of hybrid with specific properties, which depending of organic and inorganic species that was compatibilized, this gama of applications and specific properties increasing the potential technological applications of this compounds. In this sense, the study of grafting of natural layered or fibrous clays is extremely viable and promising, as this range of molecules (amino acids) not was broadly studied to formation of biohybrid materials via grafting into layered or fibrous clays. This project propose two routes to obtain biohybrid materials: (i) the direct functionalization (via condensation of aluminol groups and carboxylic acid from amino acids) or (ii) via amine functionalized matrices previously grafted with organosilanes (as example the (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane via condensation reaction between amine and carboxylic acid from amino acids. The inorganic matrices designated for this study were the layered clay mineral (kaolinite) and fibrous clays (palygorskite and sepiolite). The condensation reaction will occur directly into aluminol or magnesiol groups from clays or via amine groups. In specific case of kaolinite the synthesis occurs with the precursor previously expanded with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), this step is not necessary with the fibrous clays. This biohybrids materials will be employed as adsorbents (heavy metals, dyes, pesticids), heterogeneous catalysts (after immobilization of metalocomplexes and also as modified eletrochemical sensors to detection of anionic or cationic species. The biohybrids will be characterized by X ray diffraction patterns, infrared absorption spectroscopy, thermal analysis (TG/DTG, DSC and DTA), chemical analysis of C, N and H, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and the stability of chemical bond between inorganic and organic species will be investigated via zeta potential.
