Abstract

The aim of this project is to investigate the influence of hydroxyl (OH) content in the excited states lifetime and emission quantum efficiency of fluorescence in Nd3+ doped TeO2-WO3 and Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped TeO2-Li2O-TiO2 glass systems. Samples will be melted in an electric furnace with atmosphere control. The structural study of the glasses will be done by the infrared, Raman, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The spectroscopic parameters will be assessed by Thermal Lens and Photoluminescence techniques, whose results will be compared with that obtained by Judd-Ofelt method. It is expected that co-doping and decreasing the hydroxyl content in the glass increases the quantum efficiency, especially of the emission at 1.5 microns. Furthermore, it is expected to elucidate the mechanisms that generate the up- and down-conversion processes in the co-doped samples. (AU)
