Transcriptome analysis of Drosophila mojavensis and D. arizonae hybrids

Abstract

The request aims the coming of Dr. Cristina Vieira to Brazil, for the period 16 to 23 February 2014, to conduct research activities at the Laboratory of Molecular Evolution, under my coordination, and academic activities in the Graduate Program of Genetics, at the IBILCE/ UNESP/campus São José do Rio Preto. The coming of Dr. Cristina Vieira is related to the project "Analysis of the transcriptome of hybrids between Drosophila mojavensis and D. arizonae". The goal of the project to investigate gene regulation systems and transposable elements in closely related species, such as Drosophila mojavensis and D. arizonae and its hybrids. RNAseq analysis data also allow the development of methods to identify SNPs and differential expression of alleles in the hybrid. This project is derived from a concluded research project (FAPESP 2010/10731-4 ) in which it was planned the transposable elements expressed in two Drosophila species and their hybrids. In this project an analysis of expression of transposable elements was performed on a large scale through RNAseq in collaboration with Dr. Cristina Vieira, as proposed in the project. However, it is widely known that the technique of RNAseq allows accessing to the entire transcriptome and although not even on the original project, we decided to continue the analysis of transcriptome data particularly focusing on the coding sequences (genes). During the visit of Dr. Cristina Vieira we intend to establish strategies for the complete analysis of this large data set generated in the previous project. The transcriptome analysis of hybrids and parental species (D. mojavensis and D. arizonae) is being conducted in collaboration with researchers and students of the Laboratory of Molecular Evolution and the Laboratoire de Biologie et Evolutive Biométrie.
