Genetic characterization, sex control, and germ cell transplantation in salmonids stocks from Estação Experimental de Salmonicultura de Campos do Jordão

Abstract

Fish farming of salmonids in Brazil is performed in mountain areas of South-South Eastern Region and the production is mainly based on the rainbow trout Onchorhynchus mykiss. The domestic production is relatively small when compared to large producers like Chile and Norway and is destined for the supplying of local restaurants and hotels. The Estação Experimental de Salmonicultura de Campos do Jordão has several rainbow trout strains with specific traits for each production system or purpose. The application of triploidization, hybridization, and sex control techniques in those strains has led to significant optimization in the production of fertilized eggs/larvae with better traits for local farmers. However, the high demand of fertilized eggs and larvae in addition to the development of new products like the trout salmon and trout caviar, it became necessary to develop new strains, optimize the production of the current ones, and direct the stock breeding using genetic markers in order to attend the high demand for this product. Within this context, the present project was designed to (1) develop genetic markers for distinguishing genetically each strain as well as for the monitoring of their genetic pool, to (2) optimize the production of XXB animals using the sex determining gene of salmonids sdY for the screening of hormonally sex-reversed fish, and to (3) develop protocols for the application of surrogate broodstock approach using different strains of salmonids.
