Saline lakes in the Pantanal of Nhecolândia: Hydro-bio-geochemistry of a singular wetland

Abstract

A peculiarity of Nhecolandia, one of the largest sub-region of the Pantanal wetland in Brazil, is the presence of about 15,000 lakes and ponds from oligosaline to hypersaline. This singular ecosystem has no equivalent in the world and is still little known.However, in the last 5 years our research team has been developing researches leading to a better understanding of the variability in time and space, as well as the complexity in the hydrochemical functioning of this area. Based on this knowledge, this new project, is a direct continuity and it is divided into three work-packages: 1 - first to understand the biogeochemical functioning of black-water or green-water saline lakes, as well as their environmental consequences; 2 - to develop a model for the hydrochemical functioning of the lakes, i.e. a tool for future quantitative investigations; and 3 - to characterize the chemical speciation and dynamics of arsenic, which was shown to occur in high concentration at some part of this environment.
